You firstly have to wait your Steam to connect to Steam server, then try to log in SK while you just have to type the password again to connect to the official SK account one. It takes longer to reconnect when you disconnect due to your network outage or something. You need at least 4GB RAM to run SK and Steam at the same time (for me). I've read elsewhere that there were a bunch of Bugs with the steam Dec 3rd update (can easily find plenty of threads saying that steam changed up stuff that shouldn't impact most windows systems, but crippled running windows' version of steam in WINE for linux).
That being said - I'm beginning to think that this is a 100% steam problem.

Spiral Knights uses a release of Java 6 from 2011 which is 3 years old, so using the current release version of Java 7 has much better and more stable code overall including the DirectX abstraction layer. It will greatly reduce "freezing type" lag, reduce memory leaks (where the game lags more the longer you play it) and slightly increase FPS.
